Rogue-picked River Valley seaberries, wild-foraged Badlands juniper and virgin American white oak barrels round out Strathcona Spirits’ Barrel Aged Gin, which won Edmonton Made’s Gifted cover contest.
The smoky, aromatic liquor is handcrafted in the heart of Edmonton’s historic Old Strathcona neighbourhood, by self-taught, first-generation distiller Adam Smith.
At 740 square-feet, Strathcona Spirits is the smallest distilling operation in North America. But the use of premium, locally sourced grains (northern hemisphere wheat is ideal for distilling gin and vodka) and handpicked botanicals ensure big, uniquely Edmonton flavours in every bottle.
“If you’re a real gin freak you’re probably wondering if we use maceration or vapour infusion,” Smith says. “We do a hybrid. Maceration brings a stronger profile on the palette; infusion is a more aromatic process. Using both techniques, we get a very strong, full-flavoured spirit.”
