Why Chocolatier Jacqueline Jacek and jewelry designer Cara Cotter teamed up for mother's day

By Michelle Ferguson May 9, 2018

Two local mothers have teamed up to celebrate the precious women in their lives.

Chocolatier Jacqueline Jacek and jewelry designer Cara Cotter have created an exclusive Mother’s Day gift set featuring an elegant, handcrafted necklace and equally stunning collection of truffles to treat Moms of Gold.

The two women decided to collaborate while hosting a pop-up at Manulife with Pura Botanicals last Christmas season and drew upon the materials used by So Pretty Cara Cotter for a theme.

“When I think of moms I think of the gold standard,” Cotter says.

This is the third year Jacek Chocolate Couture has put together a special Mother’s Day collaboration. The first one featured local fine artist Giselle Denis, who helped hand paint chocolate molds in whimsical, floral patterns.

“I’m really inspired by other moms who run businesses and are pursuing their dreams while raising a family,” says Jacek.

This year the chocolatier created an exclusive line of truffles inspired by So Pretty’s Dainty Legacy pendant. The white topaz and gold pendant is timeless and classic, and the chocolates — painted in various gold hues — are meant to reflect its beauty and luxuriousness.

A self-proclaimed cocoanista, Jacek often marries fashion and chocolate to create visually stunning sweets, which she launches seasonally like a fashion designer. For this collection she asked herself: “If gold was a flavour what would it be?”

The result is an array of rich flavours from rosé ganache to champagne & orange to honeysuckle.

The partnership between Jacek and Cotter is part of a larger spirit of collaboration within the city, and in particular between a group of female entrepreneurs.

“There’s a network of women in Edmonton [that does] a lot together as far as pop-ups and collaborating and sharing of information,” says Cotter. “Being in business is scary. When you have that network of women that you can connect with… there’s this sense of comfort that we’re in this together and we are lifting each other up.”

Both entrepreneurs believe that Mother’s Day is an important time to acknowledge the influential women in their lives.

“My mom has been a critical part of the successes I’ve had,” Jacek says. “I think the biggest thing she gave me was the ability to laugh at myself and not take myself too seriously, but also to keep going and to pursue something bigger than myself.”

The Moms of Gold giftset is available for purchase in store and online while stock lasts.
